St Peter’s RC High School is one of 227 high schools in England to achieve, through a highly rigorous application process, specialist status in Business and Enterprise (B&E), as part of the government’s national specialist schools programme. The initial period of designation is four years, so that St Peter’s is now at the mid way point of its first phase of designation. Challenging targets are set out for each year of the specialist status, together with activities to achieve them. Those targets which are designed to benefit learners are identified in a school plan. A community plan sets out targets for the contributions that will be made through the specialist subjects to the work of partner schools and community groups.

The broad aims of the specialist programme may be summarised as follows:

  • Raise attainment and achievement for all pupils both in the specialist subjects and across the whole curriculum
  • Strengthen and develop the quality of teaching and learning strategies in the specialist subjects and use them to help raise standards throughout the school
  • Extend opportunities for applied learning and enrichment activity through the specialist subjects, including through links with sponsors, business, employers, further and higher education institutions and organisations related to the specialism
  • Develop within the school, characteristics which signal its specialist ethos and identity and which are reflected in the schools mission and objectives – including through encouragement of increased take up and interest in the specialist subjects
  • Work collaboratively with partner schools to provide or facilitate high quality learning opportunities and outcomes in the specialist subjects – by sharing specialist facilities and resources, enhancing further the quality of teaching and developing and disseminating good practice
  • Develop the capacity to provide or facilitate high quality learning opportunities and outcomes in specialist subjects, either working as an individual school or working collaboratively with other schools, within the schools wider local community, including local businesses, employers and 14-19 partnerships
  • The school is affiliated to the Schools and Academies Trust which provides expertise training and resources to support specialist schools to achieve excellence in their delivery and development of an enriched Business and Enterprise curriculum.
